SPACE AND PAINTING

Exhibitions  / SPACE - Space and painting

Through painting, art gave decisive contributions to the development of the space concept.

The creation of an illusory three-dimensional space on the frescoed walls of the large Roman patrician villas already raised the issue of the space nature in ancient times, which only found a solution with the Italian masters of the Renaissance.

Through them, the preparation of the 'perspective box' affirmed the full priority of space over objects, becoming geometrically consistent with the art of Piero della Francesca and physically real with Leonardo.

After Raffaello's synthesis, Mannerism forced the space language up to the breakdown of the late Baroque when the deformation of the frescoed surfaces presented new unprecedented problems that brought perspective to the highest point, handing it over to the reflection of science.
